Přemyslid dynasty

from 872 CE to 1521

The Premyslid dynasty was the first ruling dynasty of Bohemia, according to legend founded by Premysl the Ploughman, who was said to have married the princess Libuse. The first historically documented member is Borivoj I, who was baptised and established the dynasty's seat at Prague. Over the following centuries the Premyslids went from dukes to kings, with Vratislav II and later Ottokar I receiving royal titles, and Ottokar II building a short-lived empire that stretched from Silesia to the Adriatic. Saint Wenceslas, a duke murdered by his brother in the tenth century, became the patron saint of Bohemia. The main line died out in the male line with the murder of Wenceslas III in 1306, while a side branch in Silesia lasted until 1521.
