Tang dynasty

from 618 CE to 907 CE

The Tang dynasty ruled China from 618 to 907 and is often regarded as one of the high points of Chinese civilization. It was founded by Li Yuan, known as Emperor Gaozu, after the collapse of the short-lived Sui dynasty, and its capital Chang'an was among the largest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Under rulers such as Taizong and the empress Wu Zetian, who ruled in her own right as emperor of a Zhou dynasty between 690 and 705, the empire expanded along the Silk Road and encouraged trade, Buddhism and the arts. It was the age of poets such as Li Bai and Du Fu. The devastating An Lushan rebellion of 755 to 763 weakened central authority, and the dynasty finally fell in 907, leading to a period of division known as the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms.
