Treaty of Meerssen

8 August 870 CE

The Treaty of Meerssen was an agreement between two Carolingian kings, Louis the German of East Francia and Charles the Bald of West Francia, signed at Meerssen near Maastricht. It divided the kingdom of Lotharingia between them after the death of their nephew Lothair II, who left no legitimate heir, so that the territory between their realms was split along roughly the line of the Meuse, Moselle and other rivers. The share of Louis, which included Aachen, later became part of the German kingdom, and Charles took the western part. The border was changed again by the Treaty of Ribemont in 880, and Lotharingia became a contested area between France and Germany for centuries.
