Kievan Rus'

from 882 CE to 1240

Kievan Rus' was a medieval state of East Slavic peoples, ruled by the Rurikid dynasty, with its center at Kyiv. According to chronicles, Oleg of Novgorod took Kyiv around 882 and united the northern and southern lands under one prince. The state flourished through trade along the rivers connecting the Baltic and Black Seas. Under Vladimir the Great it adopted Orthodox Christianity from Byzantium in 988, and under Yaroslav the Wise it reached its cultural peak. Afterward it fragmented into rival principalities, and its power ended with the Mongol invasion, which sacked Kyiv in 1240. Ukraine, Belarus and Russia all claim it as part of their heritage.
