Construction of Preah Vihear Temple

893 CE

Preah Vihear is a Khmer Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, set on a cliff edge in the Dângrêk Mountains on the border between Cambodia and Thailand. The first sanctuary dates to the late ninth century, and later Khmer kings added to it, especially in the 11th and 12th centuries, creating a long axis of stairways, causeways and gateways that climbs the mountain. The site is famous for its dramatic setting. In 1962 the International Court of Justice ruled that the temple belonged to Cambodia, but Thailand kept disputing the surrounding land. UNESCO's listing of the temple as a World Heritage Site in 2008 triggered armed clashes between the two countries' troops over the following years.
