Premiere of NCIS

23 September 2003

NCIS is an American police procedural television series on CBS, created by Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill as a spin-off of the military legal drama JAG. It follows a team of agents of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in Washington, DC, who investigate crimes involving members of the Navy and Marine Corps. Mark Harmon plays the leader, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a former Marine with a strict set of rules, and he was the central figure for most of the show's early run. NCIS became one of the most watched series in the United States and many other countries. Its success produced spin-offs set in Los Angeles, New Orleans and elsewhere.
