Release of Tatar Wikipedia

15 September 2003

The Tatar-language edition of Wikipedia was started in the early years of Wikipedia's expansion into other languages. Tatar is a Turkic language spoken mainly in Tatarstan and other parts of Russia, as well as in diaspora communities, and it has been written in Arabic, Latin and Cyrillic scripts at different times. The Tatar Wikipedia is mainly written in Cyrillic, with tools that let readers view the text in a Latin script as well. It is maintained by volunteers and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. As with other minority-language editions, the project helps to support the use of the language online.
