Release of Slovak Wikipedia

October 2003

The Slovak-language edition of Wikipedia opened in the autumn of 2003, a couple of years after the English edition had been founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger in 2001. Like other language editions, it is written and edited by volunteers and is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, which also runs the other Wikimedia projects. It serves readers in Slovakia and in Slovak-speaking communities abroad, and it has grown into a sizeable reference work over the following years. Its launch was part of the rapid spread of Wikipedia into dozens of languages in the early 2000s, which turned the project from an English experiment into a multilingual encyclopaedia.
