The Potsdam Conference gathered the leaders of the three main Allied powers at Cecilienhof Palace near Berlin to settle the shape of postwar Europe. Harry Truman, who had taken office after Roosevelt's death, met Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill was replaced midway by Clement Attlee after Britain's general election. The delegates agreed to demilitarise and denazify Germany, divide it into occupation zones, arrange reparations and place much of the former eastern territory under Polish administration. During the conference the Allies also issued a declaration calling on Japan to surrender, shortly before the atomic bombs were used.
