The Charter of the United Nations is the founding treaty of the organization, signed on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco at the close of a conference attended by representatives of fifty countries. It built on the wartime alliance and the failure of the League of Nations to prevent another world war. The charter states the aims of maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations, promoting human rights and encouraging cooperation. It set up the main organs, including the General Assembly, the Security Council with five permanent members, the International Court of Justice and the Secretariat. It came into force on 24 October 1945 once the required countries had ratified it, and it remains the basis of the United Nations system.
