Patrick Modiano was born on 30 July 1945 in Boulogne-Billancourt. A French novelist, Modiano writes short, atmospheric books about memory, identity and loss, many of them set in Paris during the German Occupation, a period he knew only through the memories of others. His works include Missing Person, which won the Prix Goncourt, Dora Bruder, Honeymoon and The Night Watch. He also wrote screenplays, including for the film Lacombe, Lucien, directed by Louis Malle. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2014 for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies.
