The Polish People's Republic was the communist state that governed Poland after the Second World War, under the political dominance of the Polish United Workers' Party and close ties to the Soviet Union. Its first authority was the Polish Committee of National Liberation, set up in territory freed from German occupation. The country's borders were moved westward after the war, and its population became almost entirely Polish. It was a member of the Warsaw Pact. Protests and strikes against price rises, in 1956, 1970, 1976 and 1980, shook the regime, and in 1980 the Solidarity trade union emerged in Gdańsk. After martial law in 1981 and years of crisis, round-table talks in 1989 led to partly free elections and the end of communist rule.
