20 July plot

20 July 1944

The 20 July plot was an attempt by a group of German officers and civilians to assassinate Adolf Hitler and overthrow the Nazi regime. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg placed a briefcase containing a bomb under a conference table at the Wolf's Lair, Hitler's headquarters in East Prussia, now in Poland, and then left. The explosion killed several people but Hitler survived with minor injuries, protected by the heavy table. In Berlin the conspirators began a coup by using Operation Valkyrie, a plan for an emergency, but it collapsed within hours, and Stauffenberg and others were shot that night. Thousands of people were arrested in the reprisals that followed, and many, including Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, died.
