Founding of World Bank Group

4 July 1944

The World Bank Group is a family of five international financial institutions that lend to and support the development of poorer countries. Its origins lie in the Bretton Woods conference, where delegates from forty-four Allied nations agreed to create the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which at first financed the rebuilding of Europe and later turned to development in the Global South. Other members were added over time, including the International Development Association, the International Finance Corporation, the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes. Its headquarters are in Washington, D.C., and critics have attacked its structural adjustment conditions.
