People's Daily

1948

People's Daily, or Renmin Ribao, is the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and one of the most influential papers in China. It was first published in 1948 in the Hebei province, as the party's main organ in the civil war, and moved to Beijing after the communist victory. The newspaper presents the official line of the party leadership on domestic and foreign affairs, and its editorials are read closely for signals of policy changes. During the Cultural Revolution it was an instrument of political campaigns. In later decades it expanded into foreign-language editions and an online presence, and it owns the tabloid Global Times.
