Mahatma Gandhi died on 30 January 1948 in Gandhi Smriti, aged 78. An Indian lawyer and political leader, Gandhi developed the method of nonviolent resistance, known as satyagraha, during two decades in South Africa, where he campaigned for the rights of the Indian community. After returning to India in 1915 he led the Indian National Congress in campaigns of civil disobedience against British rule, including the Salt March of 1930 and the Quit India movement of 1942. He promoted simple living, spinning and religious tolerance. India won independence in 1947 but was partitioned, and Gandhi worked to stop the violence between Hindus and Muslims. He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu nationalist, and is honoured as the father of the nation.
