United Arab Republic

from 1958 to 1971

The United Arab Republic was a political union of Egypt and Syria, proclaimed amid a wave of Arab nationalism and led by the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser. Syrian politicians, fearing communist influence and instability at home, pressed for the union, which was supported by popular enthusiasm in the two countries. In practice Egypt dominated the partnership, since power was centralized in Cairo, political parties were abolished and Syrian business suffered under land reform and nationalizations. A group of Syrian army officers took Syria out of the union in a coup in 1961. Egypt kept the name United Arab Republic for another decade, until 1971, when it became the Arab Republic of Egypt.
