South Vietnam

from 26 October 1955 to 30 April 1975

South Vietnam, officially the Republic of Vietnam, was a state in Southeast Asia that existed from 1955 to 1975. It emerged from the partition of Vietnam at the 17th parallel agreed at Geneva in 1954 after the war between France and the Viet Minh. Ngo Dinh Diem took power, removed the emperor Bao Dai in a referendum and proclaimed a republic with Saigon as its capital. Supported by the United States, it fought the communist-led insurgency and the army of North Vietnam in the Vietnam War. After American forces withdrew, North Vietnamese troops captured Saigon in April 1975, and the country was merged into a unified Vietnam the following year.
