Nepalese Civil War

from 13 February 1996 to 21 November 2006

The Nepalese Civil War was fought between the government of Nepal and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known as Prachanda, who began a People's War to overthrow the monarchy and set up a republic. The insurgency began in the rural western hills and spread across much of the country, fueled by poverty, caste and ethnic discrimination, and the weakness of the state. More than thirteen thousand people were killed, and thousands disappeared or were displaced, with abuses on both sides. The royal massacre of 2001 and King Gyanendra's seizure of power in 2005 changed the course of the conflict. Mass protests in 2006 forced him to restore parliament, and a peace agreement ended the war, leading to the abolition of the monarchy.
