Launch of Integrated Taxonomic Information System

27 February 1996

The Integrated Taxonomic Information System, or ITIS, is a database providing authoritative information on the scientific names and classification of plants, animals, fungi and microbes, with a special focus on North America. It was created through a partnership of United States federal agencies that needed a common, reliable list of species names, and was later joined by partners in Canada and Mexico. Taxonomists verify the entries, which include valid names, synonyms, hierarchies and some common names. ITIS contributes data to the Catalogue of Life and other global projects, and its records are widely used by government agencies, researchers and conservation programs.
