Origins of Super Rugby

1996

Super Rugby is a professional rugby union competition for clubs from the southern hemisphere, which began as Super 12, with teams from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, formed in the new professional era of the sport. It brought together the best provincial and state players, and became the main competition of the southern hemisphere. It expanded several times, adding teams from Argentina, Japan and elsewhere, before being reduced again in the late 2010s. After the pandemic, the competition was reorganised as Super Rugby Pacific, with New Zealand and Australian teams along with Fijian and Pacific Island sides, while South African teams joined European competitions. The Crusaders, from New Zealand, have won the most titles.
