Creation of Windows Embedded Compact

1996

Windows Embedded Compact, originally called Windows CE, is a family of operating systems from Microsoft designed for small devices and embedded systems. The first version appeared in the mid-1990s and ran on handheld computers, but the system was written from scratch rather than being a cut-down version of desktop Windows. It is modular, so manufacturers can include only the components needed, and it supports real-time operation. It was the basis for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile devices, and it was used in industrial machines, point-of-sale systems, car navigation and set-top boxes. Microsoft later renamed it Windows Embedded Compact, and extended support lasted until the 2020s.
