Metrojet Flight 9268

31 October 2015

Metrojet Flight 9268 was a Russian charter flight from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to Saint Petersburg, operated by an Airbus A321, which broke apart in the air over the Sinai Peninsula soon after take-off. All 224 people aboard were killed, most of them Russian tourists. The Islamic State group's Sinai branch claimed responsibility, and Russian and Western investigators concluded that a bomb had exploded in the cargo hold. Egyptian authorities were slow to accept this conclusion. Russia suspended all flights to Egypt, and Britain halted flights to Sharm el-Sheikh, which hit Egypt's tourism sector hard and led to tightened airport security.
