Homo naledi is announced from the Rising Star cave

10 September 2015

On 10 September 2015, Lee Berger of the University of the Witwatersrand and his team announced Homo naledi, a new species of human relative found in the Dinaledi Chamber of the Rising Star cave system near Johannesburg, South Africa, after slim cavers had squeezed through a 20-centimetre gap in 2013. More than 1,500 bones of at least 15 individuals combine primitive traits, a small brain and curved fingers, with human-like feet and hands. In 2017 the remains were dated to between 236,000 and 335,000 years ago, when early Homo sapiens lived in Africa. Berger claims that they deliberately buried their dead, which is hotly debated.
