2015 Mina stampede

24 September 2015

The 2015 Mina stampede was a crowd crush during the Hajj pilgrimage, in the Mina valley near Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, as pilgrims were moving toward the Jamarat Bridge for the ritual stoning of the devil. Two large streams of pilgrims met at a crossing of streets, and the crowd became so dense that many people were crushed or suffocated. The Saudi authorities gave an official death toll of 769, but other counts, based on figures from the countries of the victims, were far higher, which made it among the deadliest incidents in the history of the Hajj. Iran in particular was critical of the Saudi handling of the disaster, and the event made tensions between the two countries worse.
