The 2015 Russian Sukhoi Su-24 shootdown occurred when Turkish Air Force F-16 fighters shot down a Russian Su-24M bomber near the Turkish-Syrian border, saying it had violated Turkish airspace, which Russia denied. The Russian aircraft was taking part in the air campaign in support of the Syrian government. Both crew members ejected, but one pilot was shot and killed by Syrian rebels as he descended, and a Russian marine died in the rescue effort, while the navigator was rescued. It was the first time a NATO member had shot down a Russian aircraft in decades, and it caused a severe crisis between Russia and Turkey, with Russian sanctions. Relations were restored in 2016 after Turkey's president expressed regret.
