The Libyan Civil War that began in 2014, often called the Second Libyan Civil War, followed the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi and the collapse of central authority. Rival governments emerged: one in Tripoli, in the west, and another in the east, backed by the House of Representatives and by the commander Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army. Many militias and foreign powers took part, with the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Russia supporting Haftar, and Turkey and Qatar supporting the Tripoli government. Haftar launched an offensive on Tripoli in 2019 but was driven back after Turkish military intervention. A ceasefire was agreed in 2020, and a transitional government was installed, though the country remained divided.
