Release of Monero

18 April 2014

Monero is a cryptocurrency launched in April 2014, with a strong focus on privacy and anonymity of transactions. It began as a fork of Bytecoin, which was based on the CryptoNote protocol, and it was first named BitMonero. Unlike Bitcoin, where all transactions are publicly traceable, Monero hides the sender, receiver and amount by using ring signatures, stealth addresses and confidential transactions. The project is developed by a community of volunteers rather than a company. Its privacy features have made it popular with users who value financial privacy, but also attractive for illicit use, and several exchanges have restricted it.
