2014 European Parliament election

25 May 2014

The 2014 European Parliament election was held across the member states of the European Union in late May. The centre-right European People's Party remained the largest group, followed by the Socialists and Democrats, but parties critical of the EU, such as the National Front in France and UKIP in the United Kingdom, made large gains. Turnout was low, a little over forty percent. For the first time, the main political groups put forward lead candidates for the post of Commission president, a system known as the Spitzenkandidat process, and after the election the European Council proposed Jean-Claude Juncker, the candidate of the largest group. The result showed the effects of the euro crisis on voters' trust in mainstream parties.
