Launch of VK

10 October 2006

VK, originally VKontakte, is the largest social network in Russia and a major one in several neighbouring countries. It was created by Pavel Durov, who started it as a site for students modelled on Facebook, and it grew by offering users the ability to share music, video and messages freely. Its relaxed handling of copyright made it controversial and led to lawsuits from music labels. In 2014 Durov left the company after a dispute with new owners who were linked to the Russian state, and he later founded the messaging app Telegram. The company, now called VK, has since expanded into email, games and other services, and it is closely tied to Russian state-aligned business.
