Construction of Suvarnabhumi Airport

28 September 2006

Suvarnabhumi Airport is the main international airport serving Bangkok, Thailand, located east of the city in Samut Prakan province. It was built to replace the old Don Mueang airport, which had become overcrowded. Its name, meaning Golden Land, was chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The passenger terminal, designed by the German architect Helmut Jahn, is one of the largest single buildings of its type in the world, with a huge steel-and-glass roof. The new airport opened after years of delay, and it faced criticism over early problems with the runways and facilities. It later became one of the busiest airports in Asia, and Don Mueang reopened for budget and domestic flights.
