Founding of WikiLeaks

4 October 2006

WikiLeaks is an organisation that publishes secret documents and other material provided by anonymous sources, founded by the Australian Julian Assange. It first came to wide attention in 2010, when it released a video of a US helicopter attack in Baghdad, followed by large collections of classified American military records on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and a quarter of a million diplomatic cables, which had been supplied by the army analyst Chelsea Manning. In 2016 it published emails from the Democratic National Committee. Supporters see the site as a tool for transparency and press freedom, while critics say that the releases endangered people and national security. Assange spent years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London and in prison, and was released in 2024 after a plea agreement.
