Creation of PowerShell

14 November 2006

PowerShell is a command-line shell and scripting language created at Microsoft, designed by Jeffrey Snover and first known under the code name Monad. Unlike traditional shells that pass text between commands, it passes structured .NET objects, which makes it easier to filter and combine the output of commands called cmdlets. Windows PowerShell 1.0 was released in November 2006 for Windows XP, Server 2003 and Vista, and it later became a standard tool for system administration. In 2016 Microsoft released it as open-source software for Linux and macOS as well, and the cross-platform version is now called simply PowerShell.
