Launch of Mars 2020

30 July 2020

Mars 2020 was a NASA mission that carried the rover Perseverance and the small helicopter Ingenuity to Mars. It was launched on an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral and landed in Jezero Crater in February 2021. The rover's main goals were to look for signs of ancient microbial life in a former lake delta, to collect and store rock samples for a possible future return to Earth, and to test technology such as MOXIE, which produced oxygen from the carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere. Ingenuity made the first powered, controlled flight on another planet in April 2021 and completed dozens of flights before a rotor was damaged in January 2024. Perseverance has continued to explore and in 2024 examined a rock with features that scientists consider possible, but unproven, signs of past life.
