Launch of Perseverance

30 July 2020

Perseverance is a NASA robotic rover sent to explore Jezero Crater on Mars, a basin that once held a lake and a river delta. It was launched from Cape Canaveral on an Atlas V rocket and landed in the crater in February 2021 using a sky-crane descent system. Its mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial life, study the climate and geology of Mars, and collect and seal rock and soil samples that could be returned to Earth by a future mission. It carried the small helicopter Ingenuity, which made the first powered, controlled flights on another planet, and an experiment called MOXIE that produced oxygen from the Martian atmosphere.
