Launch of Tianwen-1

23 July 2020

Tianwen-1 was China's first independent mission to Mars, consisting of an orbiter, a lander and a rover, launched on a Long March 5 rocket from Wenchang. It entered Mars orbit in early 2021 and a few months later the lander, carrying the Zhurong rover, touched down in the Utopia Planitia region, making China the second country to land and operate a rover on Mars. The rover studied the soil and the geology with ground-penetrating radar and cameras, and it operated for about a year before entering hibernation during the winter. The orbiter has continued to study the planet with cameras and other instruments. The mission launched in the same period as the American Perseverance rover and the Emirati Hope orbiter.
