Hope, or Al-Amal, was the first interplanetary mission of the United Arab Emirates and the first Arab mission to Mars. It was built by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre together with American universities including Colorado Boulder, and launched on a Japanese H-IIA rocket from Tanegashima. The probe carried three instruments to study the Martian atmosphere, including the weather, the loss of hydrogen and oxygen into space and the daily and seasonal changes. It entered orbit around Mars in February 2021, having travelled about seven months, as part of a cluster of missions that arrived that month. Its data are made available to scientists around the world.
