Launch of Ingenuity

30 July 2020

Ingenuity was a small NASA helicopter that travelled to Mars attached to the underside of the Perseverance rover, launched on an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral. It was designed as a technology demonstration to test whether powered, controlled flight was possible in the very thin Martian atmosphere. After landing in Jezero crater, it made the first powered flight on another planet, carrying a small piece of fabric from the Wright brothers' first aeroplane. Originally planned for a few flights, it completed dozens, scouting terrain for the rover and operating far longer than expected. The helicopter's mission ended after damage to a rotor blade, and its success inspired plans for future aerial vehicles on Mars.
