Dubai International Airport began as a modest airfield with a sand runway, opened under Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who then ruled the emirate when it was still a British protectorate. Sheikh Rashid believed that aviation and trade would be central to Dubai's future and invested in extending the runway and building terminals. The founding of the airline Emirates in 1985 made it a major hub, linking Europe, Asia, Africa and Australasia. In 2014 it overtook London Heathrow as the world's busiest airport for international passengers. It has continued to expand with large terminals and is a key part of the economy of the emirate.
