Yasser Arafat was born on 4 August 1929 in Cairo. A Palestinian political leader, Arafat co-founded the Fatah movement in the late 1950s and became chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1969. Under his leadership the PLO carried out armed attacks against Israel while also seeking international recognition for the Palestinian cause, and he addressed the United Nations General Assembly in 1974. In 1993, after secret talks, he signed the Oslo Accords with Israel and shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres. In 1996 he was elected president of the Palestinian Authority. After the collapse of peace talks and the outbreak of the Second Intifada he was confined to his compound in Ramallah. He died in Paris in 2004, and the cause of his death remains disputed.
