Imelda Marcos was born on 2 July 1929 in Manila. A Filipino politician and former First Lady, Imelda Marcos was the wife of President Ferdinand Marcos, who ruled the Philippines for two decades, much of it under martial law. She was known for her lavish lifestyle and her large collection of shoes, which became a symbol of the excess of the regime, and she played an active public role, serving as governor of Metro Manila. After the People Power Revolution in 1986, she went into exile in Hawaii with her husband. She returned to the Philippines in 1991, was elected to Congress, and faced several corruption cases, including a conviction in 2018.
