Founding of Vatican City

11 February 1929

Vatican City is an independent state inside Rome, the smallest sovereign state in the world, and the seat of the Holy See, the government of the Catholic Church. It was created by the Lateran Treaty, signed in February 1929 between the Kingdom of Italy, represented by Benito Mussolini, and the Holy See. The treaty ended the Roman Question, the dispute that had lasted since Italy took Rome from the papacy in 1870. It recognized the sovereignty of the pope over a small territory around Saint Peter's Basilica, and Italy paid compensation. The city-state has its own postal service, bank, security guards and the pope as head of state.
