Irish Free State

from 6 December 1922 to 29 December 1937

The Irish Free State was the self-governing dominion that governed twenty-six of Ireland's thirty-two counties after the Anglo-Irish Treaty ended the War of Independence. Its constitution made it a member of the British Commonwealth, with the British monarch as head of state, which divided Irish nationalists and led to a brief civil war in 1922 and 1923 between supporters and opponents of the Treaty. The first government was led by W. T. Cosgrave. After Eamon de Valera's Fianna Fail came to power in 1932, the oath of allegiance and other links with Britain were gradually removed. A new constitution replaced the Free State with a state called Ireland, known in Irish as Eire.
