Establishment of Gran Paradiso National Park

3 December 1922

Gran Paradiso National Park is the oldest national park in Italy, located in the Graian Alps across the regions of the Aosta Valley and Piedmont. It grew from a royal hunting reserve that King Victor Emmanuel II set aside in the nineteenth century to protect the Alpine ibex, which had been hunted almost to extinction. His grandson Victor Emmanuel III donated the land to the state, and the park was created to conserve both the ibex and the mountain environment. The ibex population recovered and is now its emblem, alongside chamois, marmots and golden eagles. The park is dominated by the peak of Gran Paradiso, at about 4,060 metres, the highest mountain entirely within Italy.
