Joan Fuster was born on 23 November 1922 in Sueca. A Valencian writer and essayist, Fuster was one of the key intellectual figures of Catalan-speaking culture in the second half of the twentieth century. His book Nosaltres, els valencians, published in 1962, was a controversial analysis of Valencian identity, and argued that Valencians form part of a broader Catalan-speaking community, a view that was fiercely contested in Valencia. He also wrote poems, aphorisms and essays on literature and society. Born in Sueca, he worked as a teacher and writer, and became a symbol of the defense of the Catalan language. He was the target of a bomb attack in 1981.
