Sagarmatha National Park in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal contains Mount Everest, called Sagarmatha in Nepali, as well as other very high peaks such as Lhotse and Cho Oyu. It was established in 1976 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. The park is home to the Sherpa people, whose villages, such as Namche Bazaar, and monasteries like Tengboche are part of its character. Its high-altitude ecosystems shelter animals such as the snow leopard and the Himalayan tahr. Tourism and mountaineering bring income but also problems of waste and pressure on resources.
