Founding of Yamaha Motor Company

1 July 1955

Yamaha Motor Company is a Japanese manufacturer of motorcycles and other powered vehicles, founded in Iwata, Shizuoka. It was split off from the Yamaha Corporation, the musical instrument maker, under the leadership of Genichi Kawakami, who wanted to use the firm's expertise in metalworking and engines. Its first product was the YA-1 motorcycle, a small machine that did well in early races. The company later expanded into outboard motors, boats, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and scooters. Yamaha has a long record in motorcycle racing, including the MotoGP world championship, and the two Yamaha companies are today separate, though they share a name, a logo and a history.
