Release of Lady and the Tramp

16 June 1955

Lady and the Tramp is an animated Disney film about the romance between Lady, a pampered cocker spaniel, and Tramp, a streetwise stray mongrel. It was based on a story by Ward Greene and was the first animated feature made in the widescreen CinemaScope format. Among its best-remembered moments is the scene in which the two dogs share a plate of spaghetti outside an Italian restaurant, ending in a kiss. The singer Peggy Lee wrote songs for the film and voiced several characters, including the Siamese cats whose song became famous. It was successful with the public on release, though some critics were less enthusiastic, and it was followed by a sequel decades later.
