Tim Berners-Lee was born on 8 June 1955 in London. An English computer scientist, Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web while working at the CERN laboratory in Switzerland. In 1989 he proposed a system of linked hypertext documents to help researchers share information, and by 1991 he had written the first web server and browser. He insisted that the technology be free for anyone to use, which allowed it to spread rapidly. In 1994 he founded the World Wide Web Consortium to guide the development of open standards, and he later became a professor at MIT and the University of Oxford. Knighted in 2004, he has since campaigned for an open and accessible web and for greater personal control over data.
