Construction of Disneyland

17 July 1955

Disneyland, in Anaheim, California, was the first theme park of Walt Disney and the only one opened in his lifetime. Disney conceived it as a clean, family-friendly alternative to the seedy amusement parks of the time, and it was planned with themed lands including Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland, centred on Sleeping Beauty Castle. Its opening day was marred by overcrowding, counterfeit tickets and heat, but it soon became hugely popular. The park inspired later Disney resorts around the world and shaped the development of themed entertainment, and it has been expanded and updated many times.
